Salted Honey Whiskey Sour

  • Author: Imili Johnson
  • Total Time: 5 minutes

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 oz whiskey (bourbon or rye)
  • 3/4 oz fresh lemon juice
  • 3/4 oz honey syrup (equal parts honey and warm water, mixed until smooth)
  • 1/4 tsp sea salt (plus extra for garnish)
  • 1 egg white (optional, for a frothy texture)
  • Ice cubes
  • Lemon wheel or twist, for garnish
  • A few drops of bitters (optional, for added depth)

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Honey Syrup – In a small bowl or jar, mix equal parts honey and warm water. Stir until the honey fully dissolves. This creates a smooth syrup that blends seamlessly into the cocktail.
Step 2: Chill the Glass – Place your serving glass in the freezer or fill it with ice water while you prepare the cocktail to ensure a perfectly chilled drink.
Step 3: Mix the Ingredients – In a cocktail shaker, combine the whiskey, fresh lemon juice, honey syrup, and sea salt. If using an egg white, add it now for a silky, frothy texture.
Step 4: Dry Shake – If using an egg white, first shake the mixture without ice for about 10 seconds to create a creamy, frothy consistency.
Step 5: Add Ice and Shake Again – Add a handful of ice to the shaker and shake vigorously for another 15-20 seconds until well chilled.
Step 6: Strain – Remove the ice from your serving glass and strain the cocktail into it. If using egg white, the froth should form a creamy layer on top.
Step 7: Garnish and Serve – Sprinkle a tiny pinch of sea salt over the top, add a lemon wheel or twist for a decorative touch, and, if desired, finish with a few drops of bitters.

Notes

  • Choosing the Right Whiskey – Bourbon provides a smooth, slightly sweet base, while rye whiskey adds a spicier kick. Choose based on your personal preference.
  • The Importance of Fresh Lemon Juice – Freshly squeezed lemon juice provides the best flavor. Bottled juice often has preservatives that alter the taste.
  • Egg White for Texture – While optional, the egg white adds a creamy, velvety mouthfeel that elevates the drink. If you prefer not to use raw egg, aquafaba (chickpea brine) is a great plant-based alternative.
  • Adjusting the Salt Level – If you’re unsure about the salt, start with a pinch and gradually add more until you find the perfect balance. Too much salt can overpower the drink.
  • Sweetness Adjustments – If you prefer a sweeter cocktail, increase the honey syrup slightly or reduce the lemon juice for a milder tartness.
