Tropical Storm Cocktail Recipe

  • Author: Imili Johnson
  • Total Time: 5 minutes

Ingredients

Here’s what you’ll need to make one perfect Tropical Storm cocktail:

  • 1 oz light rum

  • 1 oz dark rum

  • 1 oz coconut rum (for that delicious tropical hint)

  • 2 oz pineapple juice 🍍

  • 2 oz orange juice 🍊

  • 1 oz passion fruit juice (or substitute mango juice if needed)

  • 1/2 oz grenadine (for that iconic swirling “storm” effect)

  • 1/2 oz lime juice (freshly squeezed is best)

  • Ice (lots for shaking and serving)

  • Garnish: Pineapple wedge, maraschino cherry, and a cocktail umbrella (essential for tropical vibes!)

Instructions

Step 1 – Shake It Up:

Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Pour in the light rum, dark rum, coconut rum, pineapple juice, orange juice, passion fruit juice, and lime juice. Shake vigorously for about 15–20 seconds. You want everything to be super cold and well mixed.

Step 2 – Layer the Storm:

Fill a large hurricane glass or tiki glass with fresh ice. Strain the shaken cocktail mixture into the glass, leaving a little room at the top for the grenadine.

Step 3 – Create the Swirl:

Take your grenadine and slowly drizzle it down the inside of the glass. The grenadine will sink to the bottom and then gently swirl upwards, mimicking the stunning appearance of a tropical storm inside your glass.

Step 4 – Garnish:

Finish it off with a festive garnish! Add a pineapple wedgemaraschino cherry, and of course, top it all with a colorful cocktail umbrella for maximum tropical flair.

Notes

The beauty of the Tropical Storm lies in its balance between sweet, tart, and boozy elements. It’s important not to overpower the drink with grenadine; a little goes a long way. Also, using freshly squeezed lime juice makes a noticeable difference in keeping the cocktail bright and lively. Always use good quality rums for best results—the richness of dark rum and the creaminess of coconut rum are especially key to achieving that authentic island flavor.
