Copycat Olive Garden Alfredo Mac and Cheese Recipe

  • Author: Imili Johnson
  • Total Time: 30 minutes

Ingredients

Scale

For the Pasta:

  • 16 ounces elbow macaroni (or pasta of choice)
  • 1 tablespoon salt (for boiling water)

For the Alfredo Sauce:

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter
  • 4 cups heavy cream
  • 2 cups grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 ½ cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • Optional: Pinch of nutmeg for added depth

For Garnishing:

  • Freshly chopped parsley
  • Additional grated Parmesan cheese
  • Cracked black pepper

Instructions

Step 1: Cook the Pasta

  1. Fill a large pot with water, add a generous tablespoon of salt, and bring it to a boil.
  2. Add the elbow macaroni and cook until al dente, following the package instructions. This typically takes about 8-10 minutes.
  3. Drain the pasta and set aside. Reserve about 1 cup of pasta water in case you need to thin the sauce later.

Step 2: Prepare the Alfredo Sauce

  1. In a large saucepan or skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir occasionally to prevent burning.
  2. Once the butter is fully melted, slowly pour in the heavy cream. Stir well to combine and continue cooking over medium heat until the mixture is hot but not boiling.
  3. Add the garlic powder and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Stir to incorporate the spices.
  4. Gradually whisk in the grated Parmesan cheese. Continue to whisk until the cheese is fully melted and the sauce begins to thicken, about 3-5 minutes.
  5. Reduce the heat to low and stir in the shredded mozzarella cheese. Whisk until smooth and creamy. If the sauce becomes too thick, add a bit of the reserved pasta water until you reach your desired consistency.

Step 3: Combine Pasta and Sauce

  1. Add the cooked and drained pasta to the Alfredo sauce. Gently fold the pasta into the sauce until each piece is well coated.
  2. If needed, adjust the seasoning with more salt and pepper. For an added flavor boost, sprinkle in a pinch of nutmeg.

Step 4: Serve and Garnish

  1. Transfer the Alfredo Mac and Cheese to a large serving bowl or individual plates.
  2. Garnish with freshly chopped parsley, additional grated Parmesan cheese, and a sprinkle of cracked black pepper.

Step 5: Enjoy!

  1. Serve hot and enjoy the rich, cheesy goodness. You can serve it as a main dish or a side to grilled chicken, steak, or fresh vegetables.
