Ingredients
- For the Candy Apples:
- 6 medium-sized red apples (Granny Smith or Gala work well)
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 1 cup light corn syrup
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Red food coloring (optional, for a deeper color)
- For the Mickey Mouse Decorations:
- 6 chocolate sandwich cookies (like Oreos)
- 12 mini chocolate chips (for eyes)
- 6 red candy melts (for bows)
- 6 lollipop sticks (or wooden skewers)
- Additional Supplies:
- Parchment paper (for cooling the apples)
- Candy thermometer
- Microwave-safe bowls (for melting chocolate and candy melts)
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Apples Begin by washing the apples thoroughly under cold water to remove any wax or residue. Dry them completely with a clean towel. Insert a lollipop stick or wooden skewer into the top of each apple, pushing it about halfway down. This will make it easier to dip and hold the apples later.
Step 2: Make the Candy Coating In a medium saucepan, combine the granulated sugar, corn syrup, and water. Stir the mixture over medium heat until the sugar dissolves. Once dissolved, stop stirring and allow the mixture to come to a boil. Use a candy thermometer to monitor the temperature; you want to reach the hard crack stage, which is around 300°F (150°C). This will take about 10-15 minutes. If you desire a more vibrant color, add a few drops of red food coloring to the mixture once it reaches 250°F (120°C).
Step 3: Dip the Apples Once the candy coating reaches the appropriate temperature, remove it from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Allow the mixture to cool for a minute, then carefully dip each apple into the candy coating, turning to ensure it is completely covered. Let any excess candy drip off before placing the coated apple on a sheet of parchment paper to cool. Repeat this step for all apples.
Step 4: Prepare the Mickey Mouse Features While the candy coating is cooling and setting on the apples, you can prepare the Mickey Mouse features. Break the chocolate sandwich cookies in half to create the ears. You will need two halves for each apple. Melt the red candy melts according to the package instructions in a microwave-safe bowl. Dip the top of each apple into the melted red candy and place a melted candy bow on top. Allow the candy to set slightly before attaching the cookie ears on either side of the apple.
Step 5: Add the Eyes Finally, use the mini chocolate chips to create the eyes of Mickey Mouse. Press two mini chocolate chips into the front of the apple to complete the look. Allow the apples to sit at room temperature until the candy coating is fully set, which should take about 30 minutes.
Variation
Feel free to customize your Mickey Mouse Candy Apples in various ways! Instead of red candy melts, consider using black or yellow for different characters. You can also experiment with flavored candy coatings, such as caramel or chocolate, to create different taste experiences. For a healthier twist, consider using smaller apples or adding nuts, sprinkles, or other toppings to enhance the candy coating.
Notes
These candy apples are best enjoyed fresh on the same day they are made. However, if you need to store them, keep them in a cool, dry place in a single layer to prevent sticking. Avoid refrigerating them, as this can cause the candy coating to become sticky or sweat.
Serving Suggestions
Serve your Mickey Mouse Candy Apples on a festive platter or as part of a dessert table at a birthday party or celebration. They can be a fun addition to a Disney-themed gathering or a sweet treat for family movie night featuring Mickey Mouse films. Pair them with other treats like cupcakes, cookies, or fruit platters for a delightful dessert spread.
Tips:
- Make sure your apples are at room temperature for the best candy coating adhesion.
- Use a candy thermometer for accurate temperature readings to ensure the candy coating sets properly.
- If the candy coating becomes too thick while dipping, gently reheat it over low heat to restore the desired consistency.
- Allow the candy apples to cool completely before packaging them as gifts or party favors to prevent melting.
